Freetown, Sierra Leone – January 6, 2026 -State House has moved swiftly to quash growing online and public speculation about President Julius Maada Bio’s health, following the circulation of recent photographs that appeared to show the leader looking noticeably thinner.
Rumors had intensified in recent days, with some social media users and commentators suggesting the president’s apparent weight loss could indicate fatigue from his hectic schedule or even more serious medical issues. Others attributed it to a personal fitness or diet plan amid his busy domestic and international engagements, including his ongoing role as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a direct response, Presidential Press Secretary Yusuf Keketoma Sandi firmly rejected the concerns, stating unequivocally that the 61-year-old leader is in robust health and fully capable of leading the nation.
Speaking to local media outlet Premier News, Sandi declared: “The President is in good health. He is fit to do the job and he will continue to do the job.”
The reassurance comes as President Bio maintains an active agenda, having recently delivered a New Year’s address proclaiming 2026 as a “Year of Action” and participated in public events, including commissioning healthcare facilities and attending religious services.
Officials emphasized that the statement aims to put an end to unfounded gossip, allowing the administration to focus on key priorities such as economic stability, human capital development, and regional leadership within ECOWAS.
Citizens have expressed mixed reactions, with many welcoming the clarification while others continue to call for greater transparency on the president’s well-being.
