Freetown – Heavy rains in recent days have led to flooding in several communities across the capital, disrupting daily life and damaging property in low-lying and hillside areas.
Residents in neighbourhoods like; Kroo Bay, Congo Cross, Regent, Lumley and Goderich reported water inundating homes, streets turning into temporary rivers, and challenges with access and drainage. Some households faced temporary displacement, while local water sources in affected zones were impacted by the floodwaters.
The Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet) had earlier forecast intermittent heavy rainfall through September. NDMA Director of Communications Mohamed L. Bah and other officials urged residents to stay vigilant, avoid hillsides and steep slopes during heavy rain, stop dumping refuse into drains and waterways, keep children away from flooded areas and fast-flowing water, and follow official forecasts and advisories.
As the rainy season continues, authorities remain on alert and call on communities to remain vigilant and cooperate with emergency responders to minimise risks.
