The Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE) has officially released the timetable for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), signaling the start of preparations for one of Sierra Leone’s most important national assessments for junior secondary school students.
According to the timetable approved by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the examinations will commence on Monday, July 20, 2026, and run through Tuesday, July 28, 2026, with a weekend break in between. The schedule covers a wide range of core subjects, allowing candidates to demonstrate their knowledge across academic and practical disciplines.

Most papers are scheduled for 2 hours 30 minutes, with some shorter durations depending on the subject. The Ministry has emphasized that where there are differences between the timetable and the actual question paper, the durations indicated on the question paper should be followed. Candidates with special needs will be granted extra time — specifically one and a half times the normal duration.
The release of the timetable comes as a crucial guide for schools, teachers, and students as they intensify revision efforts in the coming weeks. BECE serves as the primary gateway for progression into senior secondary education in Sierra Leone, making thorough preparation essential.
Parents, guardians, and educators are advised to ensure candidates adhere strictly to the schedule and arrive at examination centers well before the start times. WAEC and the MBSSE have also reminded all stakeholders of the importance of maintaining examination integrity and avoiding any form of malpractice.
This year’s timetable maintains the traditional structure while incorporating subjects that reflect both academic fundamentals and practical life skills. Officials have described the early release as part of efforts to give candidates ample time to prepare effectively.
Students and schools can access the full certified timetable through their respective institutions or the MBSSE and WAEC official channels. Further updates regarding registration deadlines, examination centers, and guidelines are expected to be communicated soon.
