The Executive Director of the Residential Elderly Care Foundation (RECF), Karifa Thoronka has raised concern over the growing impact of heavy rainfall on vulnerable communities, particularly older people and children.
According to the Executive Director, elderly people and children are among those who suffer the most during periods of intense rainfall because of their vulnerability and limited ability to protect themselves from flooding and other hazards.
“Older people and children are the most to suffer from heavy rainfall. They need special attention and support, especially during the rainy season,” Karifa Thoronka said.
Heavy rainfall can leave vulnerable families facing flooded homes, damaged belongings, unsafe living conditions and difficulties accessing food, clean water and basic services. For older people living alone or in poor conditions, the situation can become even more challenging.
Children are also exposed to increased risks when communities experience flooding, particularly where drainage systems are inadequate and stagnant water accumulates around homes and neighbourhoods.
The Residential Elderly Care Foundation is therefore appealing to government institutions, humanitarian organisations, community leaders, businesses and members of the public to strengthen support for vulnerable people during the rainy season.
The Executive Director stressed that assistance should include emergency food supplies, clean drinking water, clothing, mattresses, temporary shelter and other essential items for families most affected by the rains.
The Foundation also called for stronger community preparedness and improved drainage systems to reduce the impact of flooding and protect vulnerable residents.
“We must not wait until disaster strikes before we respond. Older people and children deserve protection, dignity and care at all times,” the Karifa Thoronka added.
As heavy rains continue to pose challenges for communities, the Residential Elderly Care Foundation is urging everyone to play a role in protecting the most vulnerable and ensuring that no elderly person or child is left behind during difficult times.
