Freetown, Sierra Leone — Back-to-back Sierra Leone Premier League champions Bo Rangers FC have officially announced their decision to withdraw from this year’s Confederation of African Football (CAF) inter-club competitions, citing the need for a strategic overhaul of the club’s operations.
In a statement released by the club’s board and management, the Bo-based side — winners of the 2025/26 Leone Rock Premier League title — explained that skipping continental football this season will allow them to prioritize internal restructuring, squad strengthening, and improvements to technical and organizational frameworks ahead of future campaigns.
“While we acknowledge the disappointment this may cause our dedicated supporters following our successful championship campaign, this decision represents a necessary step toward long-term sustainability,” the statement read. “Our goal is to build a more competitive and resilient team capable of performing consistently at the highest level in future CAF tournaments.”
Financial Pressures Behind the Withdrawal
Reports indicate that financial constraints played a significant role in the decision. Bo Rangers reportedly required approximately US$250,000 to fund their participation in the CAF Champions League, covering travel, accommodation, player bonuses, and other logistical expenses associated with continental competition.
This marks a setback for Sierra Leonean football, as the club had earned the right to represent the nation as domestic champions. Should the withdrawal be formalized, Star Sport Academy is expected to step in as a potential replacement representative, pending CAF approval.
Bo Rangers FC has emerged as one of Sierra Leone’s premier clubs in recent years. They secured their first league title in the 2021–22 season and have since established themselves as consistent contenders, clinching multiple titles including the most recent back-to-back triumphs.
On the continental stage, the club has made several appearances in the CAF Champions League:
– 2022–23: First Preliminary Round
– 2023–24: Second Preliminary Round (their deepest run to date)
– 2024–25: First Preliminary Round
Despite showing promise, early exits highlighted the challenges of competing against better-resourced African sides without substantial financial backing.
The upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Champions League 2026/27 season is scheduled to begin with the first preliminary round in early September 2026, followed by subsequent stages leading into the group phase later in the year.
