Freetown, Sierra Leone — Sierra Leone’s men’s national football team, popularly known as the Leone Stars, remains ranked 122nd in the world with 1,147.56 points in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking released on Monday, July 20, 2026.
The team holds the 32nd position among Confederation of African Football (CAF) nations, sitting just behind Namibia (121st globally) and ahead of teams like Togo.
This ranking comes shortly after the conclusion of key matches in the FIFA World Cup 2026 cycle. While Sierra Leone has not qualified for the World Cup to date, the team has shown encouraging progress in recent African qualifiers, positioning itself as a competitive side in West Africa with potential for further improvement.
Sierra Leone’s current standing reflects a period of relative stability mixed with incremental gains. In September 2025, the Leone Stars climbed two places to 122nd, accumulating 1,150.01 points at that time after surpassing several opponents. Their all-time high remains 50th (August 2014), while their lowest was 172nd in 2007.
The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has been active off the pitch, appointing new leadership for the national team, alongside other technical staff changes aimed at building long-term stability. The association has also invested in infrastructure, such as new customized buses for national teams.
On the field, Sierra Leone continues its quest for a historic first FIFA World Cup appearance. As of late 2025, the team was in contention during the African qualifiers, sitting in a promising position in their group and eyeing a potential playoff spot.
Global and Continental Snapshot
The top of the latest FIFA ranking sees Spain reclaim or maintain the No. 1 spot with 1,995.88 points, followed by Argentina, France, England, and Brazil. In Africa, powerhouses like Morocco (6th globally) continue to lead the continental standings.
The next FIFA ranking update is scheduled for October 7, 2026, giving national teams time to prepare for upcoming international windows and qualifiers.
