Airport security personnel at Freetown International Airport on Sunday, 16 November 2025, arrested a Zambian national after substances believed to be cocaine were discovered concealed in her luggage during routine screening.
The suspect, identified as Miriam Shamane, was intercepted at about 8:30 a.m. in the Hold Baggage Area as she prepared to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight. Authorities say a joint security team, including officers from the Office of National Security (ONS), the Sierra Leone Police, NRA Customs, the Financial Intelligence Agency, and Westminster Aviation Security, conducted a thorough examination of her belongings, leading to the discovery of the suspected illegal substances.
Ms. Shamane, along with her passport and the seized exhibits, has been handed over to the police to assist with ongoing investigations.
Officials note that the incident highlights the persistent threat of drug trafficking through the country’s main airport and reaffirms the need for continued cooperation among security agencies to curb transnational crime.
