FREETOWN, 27th October 2026 – Alfred Farwell Thorpe, a final year pupil of the prestigious Sierra Leone Grammar School, Murray Town, has been officially named the Best Performing Candidate in the 2026 WASSCE in Sierra Leone.
The announcement was made on Tuesday 27th October by the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Hon. Conrad Sackey, when he released the 2026 results live on SLBC.
But it was Alfred’s result sheet that stole the show.
The Result That Made Headlines
Sitting eight subjects under immense national pressure, Alfred delivered what many are calling a “Regent Masterclass”:
SIX A1s, ONE B3, ONE C4 – Average Grade Point 1.63 – Classification: VERY GOOD.
It is the highest average recorded in the batch of results released to MBSSE by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
In a year when 47,454 results were withheld for malpractice and 11,492 candidates were absent, Alfred’s performance stood as proof that hard work still pays.
Who Is Alfred?
For those who know the Grammar School, this is no surprise. Founded in 1845, the all-boys school on the hill of Murray Town – fondly called Regent – has produced Presidents, Chief Justices and some of Sierra Leone’s finest brains for over 180 years.
Teachers describe Alfred as quiet, disciplined and obsessed with past questions. Friends say he was always in the library, always the first to ask for extra assignments.
On Tuesday afternoon, WhatsApp groups of Old Grammarians lit up: “Sierra Leone Grammar School is making headlines! 💙🤍” one post read. Another declared: “Regent don take am again!”
More Than Just Grades
Alfred’s feat comes at a time when Sierra Leone is celebrating a national improvement: 91,122 candidates (64.3%) got 5 Credits, up from last year, with an 81.4% paper pass rate.
Minister Sackey said results like Alfred’s show that the Free Quality School Education (FQSE) is working – not just in numbers, but in quality.
“Excellence is possible. When you stay focused, you don’t need malpractice,” a senior MBSSE official said, referencing the 47,454 withheld results.
What’s Next for Alfred?
With six A1s, doors to universities at home and abroad are now wide open. For now, the Murray Town campus is in celebration mode, with students chanting the school’s anthem and calling for a special assembly to honour their star.
From Regent to the nation – meet Alfred Farwell Thorpe, Sierra Leone’s new academic king.
