The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has begun a countrywide operation targeting vehicles fitted with unauthorised and distracting lights.
Commissioner Abdul Moijueh, Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, disclosed the move in an exclusive interview with SLP Online Television.
He said the operation is aimed at curbing the rising use of coloured LED lights, flashing lights, excessively bright headlamps and other decorative lighting on vehicles across Sierra Leone.
According to Commissioner Moijueh, these lights can distract or temporarily blind other road users, especially at night. This increases the risk of road traffic crashes and puts motorists, pedestrians and the general public in danger.
Under Sections 58 (1), (2), (3), (14) and (16) of the Road Traffic Regulations, 2011, all vehicle owners and drivers are required to:
– Fit only standard manufacturer-approved lighting systems and other lights allowed by law.
– Avoid flashing, revolving or excessively bright lights, except those specifically authorised for emergency or security vehicles.
– Immediately remove all unauthorised coloured, decorative and distracting lights from their vehicles.
The SLP has urged the public to take the directive seriously. Those who fail to comply risk enforcement action as the Police work with the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority to improve road safety nationwide.
Motorists and vehicle owners are called upon to cooperate fully with the operation and help make Sierra Leone’s roads safer for everyone.
