Freetown, 21 June 2025 – In a bold move to tackle the alarming incidents of child thefts at hospitals across Sierra Leone, Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, has commissioned the installation of smart CCTV surveillance systems at the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) Cottage in Freetown.
The security upgrade, completed on Saturday, targets critical areas within the hospital—especially the Baby Care Unit, which has been a focal point of concern for mothers and health officials alike.
The newly deployed cameras come with cutting-edge features including real-time video monitoring, rotation, high-definition recording, and snapshot functionality. The system is powered by solar energy, ensuring uninterrupted operation even during power outages.
The initiative has been widely praised by hospital staff and patients. Mothers at the facility expressed relief and appreciation for what many described as a “long-overdue intervention.” One mother said the installation had given her “peace of mind,” knowing that her newborn was under constant watch.
Healthcare workers echoed similar sentiments, welcoming the technology as a step toward rebuilding public confidence in hospital safety.
“This will not only deter potential wrongdoers but also create a more secure and trustworthy environment for maternal care,” a nurse at the facility noted.
Hospital management confirmed that a dedicated monitoring team will be assigned to oversee the use and upkeep of the surveillance system. They reassured the public that the hospital remains committed to the highest standards of child protection and maternal care.
The Sierra Leone Police Media Unit described the move as part of a broader effort to strengthen security in public institutions and protect the most vulnerable members of society.
