FREETOWN – Tragedy struck at Sarola Junction along Old Road, east of Freetown, on Friday after a man reportedly died from electrocution.
According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at around 12 noon today when the man was on top of a zinc-roofed building and came into contact with a live electricity cable.
Eyewitnesses said the contact led to his instant death. The identity of the deceased has not yet been confirmed.
Sarola Junction, along the densely populated Old Road-Kissy axis, is a busy residential and commercial area where low-lying EDSA distribution lines often run close to buildings with corrugated zinc roofing.
Similar incidents have been reported in Freetown in recent years. In previous cases at Lumley and Hill Station, residents were electrocuted after railings and transformers became electrified due to faulty connections and illegal tampering, while EDSA has also condemned vandalism and unlawful interference with its infrastructure as posing grave risks to life.
Residents are advised to stay clear of fallen or low-hanging cables and to immediately report live wire exposures to EDSA or the nearest police station.
