In a historic event on November 15, 2023, Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh of the Republic of Sierra Leone officially launched the commencement of construction for the Makolo Junction to Mabang Bridge Road Project.
This ambitious undertaking, spanning 14 kilometers, is set to enhance connectivity between Makolo and Mabang, ultimately bolstering economic ties in the region.
The road project, valued at 7.35 million Euros, is a collaborative effort between the European Union (EU) and the Government of Sierra Leone. Funding for this endeavor consists of a 2.75 million Euro contribution from the Sierra Leonean government and a substantial 4.6 million Euros from the EU.
This initiative is part of the EU’s broader commitment, totaling 48 million Euros, aimed at advancing infrastructure development in Sierra Leone. Past projects included the construction of bridges in Mabang and Magbele, both successfully commissioned in 2022, as well as the road from Moyamba Junction to Moyamba Town.
In addition to financial contributions, the Government of Sierra Leone will provide compensation to property owners affected by the road construction, grant duty waivers to the contractor, and ensure security measures are in place.
Vice President Dr. Juldeh Jalloh highlighted the significance of the Makolo-Mabang Road in advancing President Bio’s Infrastructure For Economic Competitiveness pillar within the Medium Term National Development Program.
The road will facilitate economic advantages for farmers in the southern region by connecting them to markets in the north and west.
Emphasizing the non-political nature of this development, Vice President Dr. Jalloh reiterated President Bio’s commitment to extending infrastructure, including roads, energy, health, and communications, throughout every corner of Sierra Leone.
EU Ambassador Manuel Müller expressed his satisfaction with the collaboration, stating that the Makolo-Mabang Road Project exemplifies the joint efforts of Sierra Leone and the European Union in building connectivity.
This project is seen as a significant step toward integrating Sierra Leone into the ‘Global Gateway.’
Commencing on November 1, 2023, the construction works will primarily leverage the expertise of both West African and European professionals.
The completion of this transformative project is anticipated in 2025, promising improved regional connectivity and economic growth for Sierra Leone.
