Washington, D.C., July 24, 2025 — Sierra Leone’s newly appointed Ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Amara Sheikh Mohammed Sowa, has formally presented his Letter of Accreditation to U.S. President Donald J. Trump at the White House, officially assuming his role as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sierra Leone to the United States.
During the credential ceremony, Ambassador Sowa also delivered the Letter of Recall of his predecessor and conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from President Julius Maada Bio. President Bio extended his hopes for President Trump’s continued good health and success in uplifting the lives of the American people.
Ambassador Sowa reflected on the historic ties between Sierra Leone and the United States, tracing the deep-rooted connection to the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the establishment of the Gullah community in South Carolina and Georgia. These bonds, he noted, continue to unite the peoples of both nations.
In his remarks, the Ambassador spotlighted President Bio’s “Big Five Game Changers” development agenda, which is driving progress in key sectors across Sierra Leone. He emphasised the President’s strong stance against corruption, his promotion of good governance, and efforts to create a favourable business climate.
Ambassador Sowa praised the longstanding bilateral relationship between the two countries, describing it as “mutually beneficial.” He also expressed gratitude for the consistent support of the United States in areas such as health, education, and peacebuilding.
He reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s shared commitment with the United States to multilateral cooperation, especially within the United Nations framework, highlighting the importance of international peace and security, human rights protection, and sustainable development.
