Monrovia, Liberia, July 25, 2025 – In a significant gesture of gratitude and regional solidarity, the Republic of Sierra Leone will be formally honoured for its instrumental contribution to peace and stability in Liberia during its years of civil conflict.
This recognition will form part of Liberia’s 178th Independence Day Anniversary celebration on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Earlier this year, during the 68th anniversary of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), His Excellency President Dr. Rtd. Brig. Julius Maada Bio was invited as a special guest and decorated for his heroic and selfless service during Liberia’s civil war. The honour served as a poignant tribute to his personal sacrifices and the deep, enduring solidarity between the two West African nations.
This year’s commemoration offers an opportunity to deepen the historic bonds between the peoples of Liberia and Sierra Leone. The official honour to be bestowed upon Sierra Leone reflects a broader appreciation of the country’s role as a troop-contributing member of ECOWAS during Liberia’s most trying times.
“This is more than a ceremonial gesture,” said Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to Liberia. “It is a powerful acknowledgment of our nation’s unwavering commitment to peace in the region, and a recognition of the bravery and sacrifice of the Sierra Leonean men and women in uniform who stood with Liberia when it mattered most.”
The theme of this year’s celebration, “One People, One Destiny: Healing the Past, Building the Future,” resonates deeply with the shared history of Liberia and Sierra Leone. Both nations have endured conflict, and both have contributed to regional peacekeeping efforts under the umbrella of ECOWAS.
As part of the celebration, senior officials, dignitaries, and foreign missions are expected to attend the events, with the presence of high-ranking Sierra Leonean officials reinforcing the historical and fraternal ties between the two nations.
Sierra Leone’s participation in Liberia’s peacekeeping mission came at great cost, but with a firm belief in the vision of a peaceful and united West Africa. Sierra Leone stood with Liberia not because it had to, but because it was the right thing to do.
The recognition of Sierra Leone comes at a time when both countries are seeking to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas such as security, trade, and cultural exchange. This year’s occasion will open new opportunities for collaboration and mutual growth in building a better future for the two nations.
The commemorative events will include a wreath-laying ceremony, a military parade, and cultural presentations. Sierra Leone’s honoured guests will participate in key segments of the celebration, symbolising a shared journey toward healing, peace, and progress.
As Liberia continues to rebuild and chart a new course for future generations, the recognition of Sierra Leone’s role serves as a reminder that unity and regional solidarity remain central to sustainable peace and development in West Africa.
