Freetown, Sierra Leone – 22 June 2025 – In a historic development for Sierra Leone, President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has been unanimously elected as the new Chairperson of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.
This marks the first time in the 50-year history of ECOWAS that a Sierra Leonean leader has been appointed to the subregion’s highest leadership position.
The announcement was made during the ECOWAS Heads of State Summit, where regional leaders entrusted President Bio with the mantle of guiding the bloc through its next phase of regional cooperation and integration.
Reacting to the announcement, President Bio took to social media to express his gratitude.
“I would like to express my appreciation to my fellow Heads of State and Government for entrusting me with the responsibility of chairing the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS,” he wrote.
He further affirmed his commitment to regional development: “I am eager to strengthen our collaboration and work together towards a prosperous and thriving subregion that benefits us all.”
President Bio’s election is being widely hailed across Sierra Leone as a significant diplomatic milestone and a reflection of the country’s growing influence in regional affairs.
