In a statement released today, UN Tourism Secretary General, Zurab Pololikashvili, commended Sierra Leone on the launch of its first-ever national strategy for tourism development. Pololikashvili extended his congratulations to the nation, emphasizing the crucial role of proper planning, strong actions, and good governance in harnessing the potential of the tourism sector.
The Secretary General expressed gratitude towards Minister Nabeela Tunis, highlighting her dual role as Chair of the Women in Tourism Leadership African Committee and praising her commitment and vision in spearheading this initiative.
Pololikashvili underscored the significance of Sierra Leone’s strategic move, particularly amidst the ongoing recovery efforts from the pandemic, stating, “Today, Sierra Leone sets off on an important journey. Today, you lay the foundations for transforming tourism as the sector recovers from the pandemic.”
Of particular note was Sierra Leone’s alignment of its National Tourism Plan with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a move applauded by Pololikashvili. The plan prioritizes inclusion, environmental conservation, biodiversity protection, and the creation of decent jobs, with a special emphasis on opportunities for women and youth.
Furthermore, the Secretary General emphasized the importance of forging strong partnerships with the private sector to achieve shared goals. He emphasized that collaboration would be pivotal to the success of the National Tourism Plan.
In closing, Pololikashvili reiterated the UN Tourism’s readiness to support Sierra Leone in any capacity necessary and expressed optimism about the future of tourism in the country.
