On 5th October 2024, Chief Minister of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, and a host of other luminaries in the Education sector graced the prestigious Presidential National Best Teacher Awards 2024.
The event, held at Galliness Paradise in Bo City, Southern Sierra Leone, on October 5th, 2024, coincided with World Teachers’ Day, and brought together educators, government officials, civil society organizations, and media practitioners from across the country.
The program was a moving tribute to the transformative power of education. Keynote speakers, including Dr. Sengeh, who represented the President, praised the dedication of the nation’s educators. Other notable speakers included Ministers of Education, representatives from Development Partners, the Teaching Service Commission, and Madam Gladys Branch, a former award winner, who shared her journey, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of teaching and underscoring its vital role in shaping future generations.
The vibrant decorations, including banners showcasing past winners and highlighting the President, Rtd. Brigadier Julius Maada Bio, known as the “Champion of Education” in Sierra Leone and across Africa, set the tone for a day filled with celebration and inspiration. The venue buzzed with excitement as the Bo School Brass Band played uplifting melodies, creating an enchanting atmosphere for the distinguished guests.
Each nominee was introduced through an inspiring citation, highlighting their innovative teaching methods, unique classroom environments, and significant contributions to their communities. The pride and excitement were palpable, with family members, colleagues, and dignitaries eagerly awaiting the announcement of the winners.
The highlight of the evening came with the much-anticipated announcement of the winners. The Chief Minister, after a suspenseful pause, revealed the names of the two national winners. For the Pre-Primary and Primary levels, Letticia Belgina Banya Huggins from Western Rural emerged victorious, while Sulaiman Anthonio Sengeh from Bonthe District was recognized for Junior, Senior, and Technical Vocational levels. Both teachers were celebrated for their innovative approaches to teaching and their ability to inspire a passion for learning in their students.
The winners were met with thunderous applause and heartfelt congratulations from their peers. In recognition of their outstanding contributions, each finalist was awarded a certificate and a cash prize of NLe 5,000. The national winners, in addition to their certificates, received NLe 45,000 and a parcel of land in their respective districts. a fitting tribute to their dedication and excellence.
The event concluded on a high note, with attendees sharing ideas and forging connections that are sure to lead to future collaborations in the education sector. The Presidential National Best Teacher Awards 2024 not only celebrated exceptional educators but also served as a reminder of the crucial role teachers play in shaping the nation’s future.
