The Government of Sierra Leone has declared Tuesday, February 18, 2025, as a national public holiday in observance of Armed Forces Day.
This annual event honors the dedication and sacrifices of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) in maintaining the nation’s security and sovereignty.
Armed Forces Day was established on February 18, 2002, when then-President Alhaji Dr. Ahmed Tejan Kabbah officially declared the end of the country’s 11-year civil war. In his address, he proclaimed, “the war is over,” marking a pivotal moment in Sierra Leone’s history. The day serves to commemorate the bravery of the RSLAF during the civil conflict and their participation in international missions, including World War II and various peacekeeping operations.
In recent years, the government has undertaken initiatives to enhance the welfare of military personnel. Notably, in 2019, President Julius Maada Bio announced measures to improve conditions of service for both active and retired members of the RSLAF. These efforts underscore the nation’s commitment to supporting its armed forces.
