In a recent development, the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has successfully addressed safety concerns surrounding a helicopter incident that occurred on August 5th, 2023.
The helicopter, bearing Registration Number ZS-RWT, was en route from Monrovia to Banjul via Lungi when a safety issue was detected.
Following a comprehensive Airworthiness Inspection, SLCAA identified several crucial findings. The helicopter’s Rotor Blade was found to have experienced a delamination of the polyurethane laminate, resulting in severe vibrations on the Rotor head. This issue was temporarily resolved through the removal of the delaminated section, allowing the helicopter to be transported to Hastings Aerodrome.
Moreover, engine inspection revealed traces of oil and hydraulic leakage from the main Rotor hydraulic reservoir. Prompt action was taken, and on August 13th, 2023, a Maintenance Engineer arrived from South Africa with a new set of Rotor Blades. These blades were successfully installed in accordance with unscheduled maintenance procedures.
In light of these corrective measures, the Rotor Blades were balanced, and the helicopter is now deemed Airworthy under the strict guidelines of the SLCAA CATS/CARS regulations.
The SLCAA remains committed to ensuring the utmost safety and security of civil aviation within the country. This incident highlights their dedication to upholding rigorous standards and protecting the welfare of the flying public.
