Makeni City, located in the northern part of Sierra Leone, has been hit by severe flooding after three hours of torrential rainfall.
The heavy downpour, which began earlier on Tuesday evening, has left both the central and outlying areas of the city submerged, causing significant damage to homes and businesses.
Several key roads and streets, including Lower John Street, Molala Road, Magburaka Road, Agriculture Road, Kojo Street, Teko Road, Milton Street, Rogbaneh Road, and Savage Square, are among the worst affected. All shops in these areas were forced to close due to the flooding.
Local reporter Yusuff Moseray Suma noted that the Bombali School for the Blind’s boarding home has been particularly hard-hit, though the full extent of the damage is yet to be confirmed. Other parts of the city have faced similar devastation.
Despite the Makeni City Council’s efforts to prevent such disasters by cleaning canals before and during the rainy season, it appears more support is needed.
