In a significant development, Sierra Leone is poised to become the focal point for regional peacekeeping efforts with the imminent launch of the ECOWAS Stabilisation Force headquarters in January 2024.
Foreign Affairs Minister Timothy Kabbah announced today that the force, strategically stationed at the old Lungi International Airport, will focus on stabilisation and peacekeeping initiatives in conflict zones, emphasizing its role in promoting and sustaining democracy across the region.
Contrary to an intervention force, the ECOWAS Stabilisation Force will collaborate with existing military forces in member countries, ensuring independence while collectively working towards upholding democracy.
Similar missions are already in operation in The Gambia and Guinea Bissau, further solidifying ECOWAS’s commitment to regional stability.
The establishment of the Lungi airport hub marks a significant milestone, addressing the lingering aftermath of civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone. With operations set to commence in January 2024, the force aims to mitigate the surge in coups and insecurity within the ECOWAS region.
ECOWAS Chairman, President Bola Tinubu, stressed the importance of this initiative during the 64th ECOWAS summit in Abuja, emphasizing the potential for enhanced governance and leadership across member states.
