FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – The Board of Directors of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) has called an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) for Thursday, 6 August 2026, to deal with the governance crisis that followed the disruption of its Annual General Meeting.
The AGM, set for 31 July to 1 August at the Freetown International Conference Centre, was stopped after police prevented members from completing the Association’s constitutional business, including the election of a new Board of Directors.
In a notice issued on 1 August, the current Board said its mandate ends on 18 August 2026. Beyond that date, it will have no constitutional authority to remain in office.
The Board has therefore summoned members to the EGM at the D’Bim D’Bam Multipurpose Complex on Wellington Street, Freetown, starting at 2:00 p.m.
The meeting will consider key resolutions, including:
– Acknowledging that the present Board’s term expires on 18 August
– Appointing a Caretaker Body approved by members to manage the Association’s affairs
– Setting out the Caretaker Body’s duties – protecting assets and records, keeping administration running, convening the AGM, and overseeing elections
– Fixing the Caretaker Body’s duration so that it ends once a new Board is elected and sworn in.
The Board said the EGM is needed to uphold the Association’s Memorandum and Articles of Association, democratic principles and the rule of law.
It described the meeting as a vital step to restore confidence in the SLBA’s governance and ensure a transparent handover to new leadership.
