Following the security issues on Sunday, November 26th, 2023, an indefinite curfew was imposed by government from 9:00p.m to 6:00 a.m every day until further notice. The curfew has affected every sector of society, including commercial sex workers, especially those on the streets.
Sex workers, on the streets, hustle at night; however, the 9pm-6am curfew has halted their trade.
Sex workers at Jui junction spoke to Expo Times and explained their challenges.
“We are not happy with about the incident on Sunday because it has affected our business,” they said.
Susan, not her real name, said she is a single parent with three children. She hustles at night to earn money for feeding and pay her children’s school fees, but with the limited time on the street, imposed by the curfew, things have become challenging for her and her children.
“I am calling on the government to extend the time to 12 midnight,” she noted.
According to her,she now makes One Hundred Thousand New Leone or nothing at all; but that before the curfew, she was making around Five Hundred Thousand New Leone.
One of them, who lives in Waterloo, narrated the constraints caused by the night Curfew. According to her, even transportation is a serious issue. “We are not happy with the situation because we are not doing any business,” she noted, adding that most of them come from a distance as they feel ashamed to prostitute in their communities.
