KAMAKWIE, September 5, 2024 – Police Constable Alhassan Tejan Kamara, attached to the Operation Support Department (OSD) of the Kamakwie Police Division, has pleaded guilty to disciplinary charges related to the brutal assault of his girlfriend, Isatu Foday Conteh.
The incident, which occurred on September 1, 2024, at Looking Town, Kamakwie 2, has drawn widespread attention, culminating in a public disciplinary hearing held this afternoon.
The disciplinary hearing, which was ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu, was conducted publicly in Kamakwie Town to demonstrate the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to maintaining discipline and enforcing a zero-tolerance policy towards domestic violence.
“We want the public to see that no one is above the law, and the police are not an exception,” said IGP Sellu during the hearing.
The presiding officer, after hearing testimony from the complainant and reviewing the evidence, recommended the immediate dismissal of Constable Kamara from the police force. This recommendation is pending approval from the IGP. If approved, Kamara could also face criminal charges under Sierra Leone’s Domestic Violence Act of 2007.
During the hearing, Kamara pleaded guilty to all three counts listed on the charge sheet, which included assault, failing to comply with standing orders issued by the IGP, and conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline.
The hearing’s outcome has been received with approval by Kamakwie residents, who attended the public session.
The IGP’s decision to hold the hearing in such a transparent manner has been seen as a strong message against domestic violence within the force and the broader community.
Photos from the hearing, including those of the perpetrator, the victim’s injuries, and the attending public, have been circulated to further raise awareness about the consequences of such actions within the police force.
