Freetown, Sierra Leone – Tensions continue to grip Sierra Leone as another attempted coup has been thwarted. Captain Aba Senesie and Captain TL Konteh, fugitives from the November 26 coup attempt, have been killed in a fierce gunfight with the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).
According to a statement from Major Yayah Brima, Media Operations Officer at the Joint Force Command Headquarters in Cockerill Barracks, the two captains were allegedly attempting to launch another coup when they were intercepted by security forces.
Details of the confrontation remain limited, but the incident reportedly took place late Tuesday evening.
The latest development follows the November 26 attacks on strategic locations in Freetown, which led to a nationwide curfew and heightened security measures across the country.
President Julius Maada Bio claimed the initial coup attempt was successfully repelled by security forces, with international organizations condemning the acts as attempts to disrupt constitutional order.
The political landscape in Sierra Leone remains tense, with the president’s June 2023 reelection facing disputes from the opposition. Earlier this year, a coup plot in August led to the arrest of multiple soldiers, further fueling unrest within the military ranks.
The November 26 coup attempt resulted in at least 21 fatalities, including 14 soldiers fighting for the government, as well as several injuries. The government has since pursued harsh sentences for those involved, with convictions in July 2024 leading to long prison terms for numerous defendants.
Authorities have not yet released full details about the most recent incident but emphasized that the security situation is under control. The government continues to appeal for calm as investigations unfold.
How just two people from Waterloo stage a coup off the sites of Freetown or even d state house
None sense
The message is not clear
