Freetown, November 27, 2024 — The government of Sierra Leone has disclosed that two fugitive army captains linked to last year’s failed coup attempt on November 26, 2023, were killed in a security operation in the Western Area Rural District.
The Ministry of Information and Civic Education confirmed the incident in a public notice, stating that Captains Aiah Aba Senesie and T.L. Konteh had been tracked to a hideout where they were reportedly planning further destabilizing actions.
“Acting on credible intelligence, our security forces conducted a decisive operation to apprehend these fugitives,” the statement read. “Unfortunately, the suspects resisted arrest, opening fire on the operatives. Both sustained fatal injuries in the exchange.”
The government emphasized its unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and stability.
“Efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining fugitives continue,” the notice added, urging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement by providing any information that could assist investigations.
Local residents expressed relief at the operation’s outcome. “This sends a strong message that Sierra Leone will not tolerate threats to its peace and democracy,” said a community member who preferred to remain anonymous.
The Ministry assured the public that further updates on the operation and related matters would be provided as necessary.
The latest development follows the 26 November 2023, attacks on strategic locations in Freetown, which led to a nationwide curfew and heightened security measures across the country.
The November 26 coup attempt resulted in at least 21 fatalities, including 14 soldiers fighting for the government, as well as several injuries. The government has since pursued harsh sentences for those involved, with convictions in July 2024 leading to long prison terms for numerous defendants.
