In an alarming turn of events, the Security Sector has stated a security incident that unfolded in the heart of Freetown’s Central Business District this Thursday, September 21, 2023.
According to the Security Sector’s report, the incident involved a notorious armed robber and a violent individual known as Foday Alieu, alias Big Fish.
They noted that Alieu brazenly approached and seized the rifle of a female police officer stationed near the United Bank for Africa (UBA) on Lightfoot Boston Street, adjacent to Charlotte Street. In a shocking act, Alieu began firing the stolen weapon indiscriminately, posing a grave threat to public safety.
The statement added that despite repeated professional efforts to persuade Alieu to surrender the weapon and cease his dangerous actions, he persisted in his random gunfire. Subsequently, a military officer attempted to intervene and urged Alieu to drop the firearm, but these efforts proved futile.
The Security Sector noted that given the imminent danger posed by Alieu, the brave military officer resorted to the provisions of Section 16 (2) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, Act No. 6 of 1991, and neutralized the armed assailant with a gunshot.
They disclosed that during the chaotic incident, a female passerby sustained a gunshot injury to the head. Fortunately, initial reports suggest that the injury is not life-threatening.
The remains of Foday Alieu have been transferred to the morgue, while the injured pedestrian has been transported to the hospital for medical attention.
The Security Sector has assured the public that the Sierra Leone Police swiftly regained control of the situation and restored normalcy to the area.
Further details on this incident will be shared with the public as the ongoing investigations progress.
In closing, the Security Sector emphasized its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and urged everyone to continue their lawful activities while refraining from engaging in any form of lawlessness. The Security Sector remains vigilant and ready to protect the people of Sierra Leone.
