In a momentous announcement, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone delivered a national address on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, celebrating the successful resolution of a pivotal peace dialogue between the government and the All People’s Congress (APC).

This momentous dialogue, which occurred from October 16th to 18th, had a primary objective of fostering political discourse and inclusive governance post the multi-tier elections in 2023.

The President’s address was a poignant reflection on the significance of unity, collective effort, and the nation’s progress beyond political differences. Facilitated by ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Commonwealth, the dialogue provided a platform for the APC to express their concerns regarding the 2023 elections and their readiness to collaborate with the government to resolve conflicts.

President Bio expressed heartfelt gratitude to Her Excellency Aja Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, the leader of the joint mediation team, and the experts from ECOWAS, the African Union, and the Commonwealth for their unwavering dedication during the mediation process.

He also extended appreciation to the nation’s development partners who supported the journey toward peace and advancement.

The President commended the leadership of both the APC and the SLPP for prioritizing the nation’s interests during the three-day dialogue, setting aside their concerns to reach resolutions that champion inclusive governance.

His address also acknowledged the patience, resilience, and unyielding hope of every Sierra Leonean citizen in their pursuit of a stable democratic society.

President Bio was thoroughly briefed on the details of the negotiated settlement between both political parties, underlining the utmost consideration that would be given to the provisions within the mediated Dialogue Agreement.

The government is fully committed to working with the main opposition party and other political groups to ensure the full implementation of these provisions while upholding the rule of law, which is essential for the country’s young democracy.

Furthermore, the President emphasized the importance of strengthening democracy through the review of election systems and encouraged Sierra Leoneans to embrace unity and reconciliation, setting aside their differences for a brighter future.

He reminded all citizens of their crucial role as stakeholders in the nation’s progress and prosperity.

The President’s address called for engagement, compromise, and the indispensable hallmarks of governance, urging the opposition to demonstrate leadership by fostering peace and stability. The reintegration of opposition members into elective institutions was welcomed, with a focus on the government’s critical national development priorities.

In conclusion, President Bio stressed that the dialogue transcended political boundaries, serving the higher purpose of inclusiveness and unity. The government is resolutely committed to addressing citizens’ concerns, promoting economic growth, improving education, healthcare, agriculture productivity, infrastructure development, and ensuring all Sierra Leoneans benefit from these development efforts.

The President called on the nation to remember the lessons learned during challenging times, emphasizing the collective responsibility of safeguarding democratic values and strengthening national cohesion.

He expressed the nation’s collective weariness of political disputes, hate speech, and disunity and the collective determination to say, “NEVER AGAIN.” The address urged a focused collective effort on a national agenda delivering food security, youth employment, women’s empowerment, and propelling Sierra Leone toward becoming a middle-income economy.

While Sierra Leone’s differences contribute to its strength, they should never overshadow the unity that binds the nation’s people together.

As Sierra Leone continues to lead in the sub-region and now holds a seat on the UN Security Council, the President rallied the nation to support the government’s efforts in making Sierra Leone proud and prosperous.

The address concluded with a heartfelt wish for the longevity of the Republic of Sierra Leone and blessings upon its citizens.
