Provisional election results from Liberia, released by the nation’s election commission on Sunday, have revealed a closely contested presidential race between incumbent President George Weah and opposition leader Joseph Boakai following the October 10 election.
With results tallied from 72.92% of polling places, President Weah is holding a slight lead with 43.80% of the vote, while Joseph Boakai is closely behind with 43.54%.
NEC chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansannah on Sunday unveiled the progressive results, representing 4,295 out of 5,890 polling places, accounting for 72.92% of the total polling places.
The NEC reported that 1,355,140 valid votes have been counted thus far, with 80,910 invalid votes recorded.
To secure the presidency without the need for a runoff, the winning candidate must obtain more than 50% of the votes cast.
