General Mamady Doumbouya, Guinea’s military junta leader, has imposed a ban on ministers traveling abroad without his explicit permission, according to a statement released by his office on Thursday.
All ministers currently on foreign missions have been ordered to return immediately.
The travel restriction, which takes effect immediately and will remain in place until the end of the year, aims to curb public spending, according to government spokesman Ousmane Gaoual Diallo.
“The decision reinforces government efficacy while ensuring optimal management of the state’s resources,” Diallo told AFP.
Despite the restrictions, senior government officials and diplomats are still authorized to represent Guinea in international engagements.
General Doumbouya, who led the military coup in September 2021, took power from the civilian government. Initially, the junta promised to restore civilian rule by the end of 2024, but it has since indicated that this deadline will not be met.
