The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) expressed its gratitude to the people of Sierra Leone for their peaceful and active participation in the highly anticipated multi-tier elections held on June 24th, 2023.
The Commission also extended its appreciation to the Government of Sierra Leone for financing over 90% of the election costs, while acknowledging the contributions of development partners that supported civil society organizations and voter education initiatives, contributing to a remarkable voter turnout across the nation.
The June 24th General Elections have gained international acclaim as one of the most peaceful elections held in Africa.
Accredited Observer Missions, in accordance with Section 164 of The Public Elections Act, 2022, closely monitored the electoral process. While awaiting the final reports from these missions, the ECSL assured that any recommendations that align with the country’s laws and best practices will be thoughtfully considered to enhance future election processes.
Throughout the pre-election, election day, and post-election periods, the ECSL strictly adhered to national statutes and international best practices, ensuring the election results accurately reflected the will of the voters.
Addressing concerns circulating on social media, the ECSL categorically denied any interference or duress exerted on its Chief Electoral Commissioner, Commissioners, or staff by His Excellency the President or any Government Official. Such unfounded claims were deemed malicious and detrimental to the country’s democracy, urging the public to rely on credible sources for information.
Acknowledging the technical challenges and capacity issues encountered during the election process, the ECSL expressed its commitment to reviewing and strengthening its institution to become more responsive and robust in the future.
With the substantial logistical challenge of managing over 90,000 personnel and 11,000 stations, the ECSL commended its dedicated staff and contract workers who worked tirelessly to ensure the credibility of the election results. The Commission assured all political parties, partners, and citizens that it remains open to addressing any issues or concerns through appropriate and legal channels.
The ECSL took pride in its service to Sierra Leone, delivering one of the most credible, inclusive, transparent, and peaceful elections since the reintroduction of multiparty democracy in the country.
The Commission extended heartfelt gratitude to all partners who collaborated in making this significant achievement possible.
As the nation embraces the aftermath of the elections, the ECSL remains vigilant in safeguarding the peace and stability that Sierra Leoneans continue to cherish.
