High Court Judge, Honourable Justice Isata Susan Sellu-Tucker, has handed down lengthy prison sentences to two men found guilty of unlawful possession of prohibited drugs, in violation of the National Drugs Control Act No. 10 of 2008.
The convicts, Sheka Kamara, 25, of Leah Street, off Kissy Road, and Abu Bakarr Sesay, 55, of Kosso Town, were charged on a single count each of unlawful possession of drugs contrary to Section 8(a) of the Act.
According to court records, Kamara was arrested on 28th March 2024 in Freetown with 25 grams of Kush, while Sesay was apprehended on 27th October 2024 at Malta Street, also in Freetown, with 60.5 grams of the same substance, both without lawful authority.
The men pleaded guilty to the offences. In delivering her sentence, Justice Sellu-Tucker acknowledged their early guilty pleas and remorse, noting that it saved the Court valuable time. However, she stressed that drug-related offences are on the rise and continue to pose serious threats to society, warranting strict punishment to deter others.
Consequently, Sheka Kamara was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment, while Abu Bakarr Sesay received 10 years, both to be served at the Pademba Road Male Correctional Centre.
