The Sierra Leone Police have officially charged Abdul Kpaka with the murder of Sia Fatu Kamara, a case that has drawn widespread public outcry. Kpaka is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow, August 28, 2024, in Freetown.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kamara, speaking on Radio Democracy’s “Good Morning Salone” program, confirmed that the investigation into Kamara’s death has been completed.
The case file was submitted to the Law Enforcement Department last Friday. Following a review, the department requested some adjustments, which have now been made, clearing the way for the court proceedings to begin.
The tragic death of Sia Fatmata Kamara has been condemned by both the public and various rights groups, who are demanding a swift investigation and trial. A postmortem examination revealed that Kamara suffered broken ribs and a damaged spinal cord, further intensifying calls for justice.
Women across Sierra Leone have also called on the police to expedite their investigation into Kamara’s death, stressing the need for a thorough and timely resolution of the case.
In response to the public outcry, Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, released a video message in which she vowed to ensure justice is served. She acknowledged the many messages from concerned citizens urging her to intervene and assured the public that she is closely following the case.
“I have taken the time to follow up on the matter and gather various documents related to her death,” Dr. Bio stated, urging the family of the deceased to be patient and advising the public against jumping to conclusions.
“We must give the authorities the space they require to carry out their work and reach their conclusions,” she added.
Dr. Bio reaffirmed her commitment to staying involved with the ongoing investigation and advocating for justice for Sia Kamara. She noted that the tragic incident has not only captured national attention but has also raised serious concerns about domestic violence in the country.
Sia Fatu Kamara will be laid to rest on Sunday, September 1, 2024, following a funeral mass at the Charles Davies Memorial United Methodist Church in Lumley. A laying-out memorial service will be held on Friday, August 30, at the Freetown City Council Auditorium.
