In response to a concerning surge in road accidents attributed to reckless driving and negligence, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has issued a stern notice outlining comprehensive measures aimed at curbing lawlessness on the roads.
The SLP expressed deep concern over the growing number of road crashes that have resulted in severe injuries, fatalities, and property damage.
Effective September 1, 2023, the Directorate of Traffic Management and Road Safety will implement a series of strict traffic regulations with the objective of restoring order on the roads, safeguarding pedestrians, and enhancing traffic flow.
The key measures set to be enforced include:
- Prohibition of Road Abandonment and Parking: Vehicle owners, motorcycle (okada), and tricycle (kekeh) riders are strictly prohibited from abandoning or parking their vehicles on the roadways. Garage owners are similarly barred from using public roads as makeshift garages. Existing abandoned vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles must be promptly removed.
- Time-Limited Parking: Vehicles are not permitted to be parked on any road within Freetown or the provinces for more than one hour. The Police and Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) will closely monitor and ensure compliance with this rule.
- Hill Side Bye Pass Road Restriction: Absolute prohibition of vehicle parking on or along the Hill Side Bye Pass Road.
- Helmet Mandate: All motorcycle riders and their passengers are required to wear helmets while traveling on the roads. Failure to adhere to this regulation will result in arrests and prosecution.
- Junction Parking Restrictions: Immediate prohibition of parking by motorists, bike, and tricycle riders at all major junctions along the route to and from Waterloo and the provinces. Parking will be limited to dropping off and picking up passengers or pillions.
- Central Business District Restriction Continues: The restriction imposed on commercial motorcycles (okadas) from operating within the Central Business District remains in effect.
The Sierra Leone Police emphasizes its dedication to ensuring the safety of all road users and maintaining a disciplined road environment.
The public is urged to comply with the outlined regulations, which are poised to make a substantial contribution to reducing road accidents and fostering a safer road culture. Authorities warn that stringent enforcement measures will be implemented to hold violators accountable for their actions.
These measures mark a significant step forward in enhancing road safety and restoring order to Sierra Leone’s thoroughfares. The Sierra Leone Police encourages collaboration from all citizens to create a safer and more responsible road environment for everyone.
