Areej Zayid, a female science student from Naiahacom High School, has emerged as the top-performing candidate in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
She excelled by scoring 6A1s and 2B3s across eight subjects, placing her at the pinnacle of this year’s results. Hot on her heels was Alpha Ibrahim Bah from St. Edwards Secondary School, who achieved 6A1s, 2B2s, and a C4 in the nine subjects he sat for.
The announcement was made today by the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Conrad Sackey, during a live broadcast on national television.
In addition to individual achievements, Dele-Peddle International High School was named the best-performing institution, boasting a 100% pass rate. All 17 of its candidates met the requirements for university admission, achieving credits or better in five subjects, including English and Mathematics.
However, challenges remain as the results of 36 private schools, representing 10,562 candidates who owe the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), were not included in the MBSSE’s report. Additionally, the results of 27,097 candidates were withheld pending further investigation.
Areej Zayid’s success comes as female students made up 52.1% of this year’s candidates, marking a significant achievement for women in education.
