A young man, identified as James Jabaty, was arrested on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, for impersonating a police officer in the Bo No. 2 Extension community.
Jabaty was apprehended while wearing a Police Operational Support Division (OSD) polo shirt, presenting himself as an officer, despite his notorious reputation as an impostor.
Residents grew increasingly suspicious of Jabaty’s behavior and decided to take action. They detained him and subsequently handed him over to the police.
Jabaty was taken to the office of the Regional Police Commander South, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Mr. Brima Kanneh. In light of ongoing security concerns, AIG Kanneh ordered an immediate search of Jabaty’s residence.
During the search, police discovered a pair of scissors and a knife. Investigations revealed that Jabaty had been impersonating a member of the Sierra Leone Police Force, allegedly using a fake police ID card to intimidate and extort residents, including motorbike riders.
In his initial statement, Jabaty claimed that he received the OSD polo from his older brother, who he alleged is a police officer. However, efforts to verify the identity of this alleged brother have yet to produce results.
In response to the situation, AIG Kanneh urged investigators to expedite the case against Jabaty and ensure he faces swift justice.
He condemned Jabaty’s actions, emphasizing that such impersonation undermines the integrity of the police force.
AIG Kanneh stressed the need for a strong response to deter similar behavior in the future.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
