FREETOWN, 15th October 2026 – Second-year Law student of Fourah Bay College, Ms. Edwina Hawa Jamiru, has been rusticated for the entire 2026/2027 Academic Year for insulting the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Alusine Jalloh.
The rustication was approved by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Sierra Leone, on behalf of Senate, following a disciplinary investigation into posts Jamiru made in June 2026.
This was contained in a letter dated 12th October 2026, with reference number USL/161, signed by the University Registrar, Munda J. S. Lebbie, and addressed to Jamiru, Reg. No. 12143, Faculty of Law.
According to the letter, the FBC Disciplinary Committee was set up to investigate an alleged insult against Professor Jalloh by Jamiru.
During the disciplinary hearing, the University said Jamiru was given the opportunity to defend herself in accordance with the principles of natural justice. She admitted writing the said posts but maintained that her comments were directed at the Dean’s actions, not his person.
The Committee, however, after carefully examining the evidence tendered, found her guilty of using insulting and disrespectful language against the Dean on the Faculty’s WhatsApp forum.
Consequently, the Committee recommended that she be rusticated for one academic session, a recommendation that has now been approved.
“You therefore stand RUSTICATED for the 2026/2027 Academic Year. You are to resume your studies in the 2027/2028 academic session and continue from the level you left off,” the letter stated.
The University also stated that Jamiru is required to pay her fees in full and register before being allowed in class for lectures.
The letter further informed her of her right to appeal to the Court of the University of Sierra Leone, as provided for in Part IX, Section 50 (5) of the Universities Act, 2021, within fourteen days of receipt of the letter.
