FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has warmly welcomed the successful conclusion of the mediated dialogue held between the Government of Sierra Leone and the main opposition All People’s Congress Party (APC).
In a press statement issued on Friday, October 20th, 2023, the SLPP expressed its satisfaction with the commitment shown by the government in supporting interparty engagement to foster peace and enhance interparty relations.
The SLPP extends its appreciation to the Government of Sierra Leone for its commitment to aiding the resettlement of individuals who were displaced due to election-related violence during the multi-tier elections on June 24th, 2023. An integral part of this agreement is the provision for the SLPP to compile and submit a comprehensive list of its affected supporters for consideration. Similar lists will be prepared for other matters outlined in the Agreement.
Furthermore, the SLPP stands in solidarity with the Government of Sierra Leone and the All People’s Congress Party in condemning any individuals who promote violence in the country, both online and offline. The SLPP pledges its support to the government in bringing these individuals to justice.
This milestone achievement was made possible through the diligent efforts of the facilitators of the mediated dialogue, including the African Union, the Commonwealth, and ECOWAS. Special recognition was given to the facilitator of the mediation, Her Excellency Madam Haja Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, for her pivotal role in promoting peace and unity throughout the process.
The SLPP expressed gratitude to diplomatic missions and development partners who actively participated in the dialogue and have committed to supporting the implementation of the signed Agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and the All People’s Congress.
The leadership of both major political parties, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio, the Leader of the Sierra Leone People’s Party, and Dr. Samura Matthew Wilson Kamara, the Leader of the APC, were lauded for their willingness to engage in dialogue and their commitment to the Agreement.
The Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion was also recognized for its significant efforts in facilitating the dialogue, which ultimately led to a peaceful resolution.
The SLPP calls on its members and all Sierra Leoneans to embrace the “Agreement for National Unity” and continue to uphold law and order, ensuring a peaceful environment for the nation.
In closing, the Sierra Leone People’s Party congratulates the entire nation of Sierra Leone, emphasizing that the people are the true victors of this dialogue. The country has once again demonstrated its commitment to dialogue and peaceful solutions when faced with challenges that hinder national development.
