On Saturday, October 19, 2024, Mrs. Matilda Doris Sellu, the wife of the Inspector General of Police and President of the Police Wives Association, inaugurated a newly constructed clubhouse for the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Female Football Team at the Kingtom Police Barracks field.
This initiative aims to enhance team preparation for the upcoming season and motivate players ahead of the challenges that lie ahead.
During the unveiling ceremony, Mrs. Sellu expressed her delight in attending this significant event, recalling discussions with IGP Sellu about the accommodation challenges faced by the female team, particularly for foreign-based players.
She emphasized her commitment to providing essential household facilities, such as foam mattresses and freezers, to ensure a comfortable living environment for the athletes housed in the new facility.
Additionally, Mrs. Sellu donated two brand new footballs and promised ongoing support for the well-being of the players as they gear up for the next female premier league season.
Mrs. Sellu encouraged both players and supporters to take meticulous care of the clubhouse, stating, “Proper maintenance of these facilities will inspire us to continue investing in the team.”
She also expressed her gratitude to the SLP Sports Committee for their unwavering support in bringing this project to fruition.
ACP Brima Kamara, Head of the Media, Public Relations, and Sports Department, welcomed attendees and highlighted the challenges of managing sports in Sierra Leone. He noted the significant contributions of IGP Sellu and DIG Samadia, represented by their enthusiastic wives, to the advancement of female football within the SLP.
“Everything we do is in the interest of sports,” he affirmed.
ASP Martin Jusu Samba, Chairman of the Sierra Leone Police Sports Committee, provided a brief overview of the project, explaining that the persistent accommodation issues faced by female players, particularly those from abroad, prompted the construction of the clubhouse.
The event concluded with the introduction of ten newly contracted players, including five foreign athletes, followed by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting to officially mark the opening of the clubhouse.
With this new development, supported by Mrs. Sellu’s philanthropic endeavours and the SLP Sports Committee, the team remains optimistic about clinching trophies in the upcoming 2024/2025 female premier league season.
