REETOWN, Sierra Leone – In a press release issued today from the Police Headquarters on George Street, the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has expressed its concern over the activities of locally made boats and canoes operating and berthing at wharves across the country during the night.
While these operations initially seemed to be related to sea transportation and fishing, the SLP is now revealing that these activities might have far-reaching security implications.
To address this alarming situation, the SLP convened a meeting with key stakeholders on August 29th, 2023. During the meeting, credible intelligence was shared, indicating that certain individuals with ulterior motives plan to exploit the cover of night to carry out covert and potentially harmful activities using these wharves.
In light of these security threats, the SLP has announced the implementation of the following measures:
- Effective from September 1st, 2023, all boats will be prohibited from using, berthing, or anchoring at any wharf in the country after 7pm.
- The SLP, in collaboration with various government entities including ministries, departments, and agencies, will significantly increase monitoring and security checks at all wharves across Sierra Leone.
The SLP emphasizes the importance of strict compliance with these measures, warning that those who fail to adhere will face the full force of the law. As the nation seeks to ensure its citizens’ safety, the Sierra Leone Police remains committed to preserving security and order across the country.
