The Minister of Energy for Sierra Leone, Alhaji Kanja Sesay, submitted his letter of resignation to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio this morning.
This decision was made in the wake of a national blackout, for which the Minister has taken responsibility.
According to journalist, Amadu Lamrana Bah, te reasons for his resignation haven’t been made public but a family source told him that Mr. Sesay believes that he is being undermined by the Ministry of Finance over the payment of the over US$40 million debt to the Turkish Karpowership.
Mr Sesay served as the Energy Minister for six years and was regarded as one of President Bio’s finest ministers during his first term in office.
His resignation has caused rumours to circulate regarding the potential appointment of a new Energy Minister.
In the upcoming days, President Bio is anticipated to name Mr Sesay’s replacement as the government attempts to resolve the nation’s energy crisis.
About a week ago, President Bio reportedly gave an ultimatum that he would personally take over the energy sector if the ongoing energy crisis is not addressed.
As Kanja, the longest-serving Energy Minister in recent times leaves, the country is still faced with an energy crisis that recently caused the death of a baby at one of the biggest referral hospitals in the capital, Freetown.
