In a significant diplomatic achievement, President Julius Maada Bio has lauded the United Nations Security Council for adopting the Statement by the President of the Security Council (S/PRST/2024/3), which reinforces the mandate of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).
During the General Debate of the High-Level Week at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, President Bio addressed fellow world leaders, emphasizing Sierra Leone’s commitment to prioritizing the West African subregion during its tenure on the Security Council.
He outlined plans to tackle the pressing security, humanitarian, political, and socioeconomic challenges in the region.
This endorsement marks a breakthrough after three years of stalled consensus on a Presidential Statement supporting UNOWAS and recognizing the critical efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Bio expressed his satisfaction with Sierra Leone’s collaboration with Switzerland in achieving this milestone.
President Bio has instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Sierra Leone’s UN delegation to continue their vital work at the Security Council, emphasizing partnership, multilateralism, and representation to maintain global peace and security.
