Freetown, 13 November 2025 – The Congo Cross Police Division has arrested six people suspected of attempting to dump an unidentified corpse at the Wilberforce Cemetery, just weeks after a similar incident occurred at the same site.
The arrests were made following a timely intervention by concerned community members who noticed suspicious activity and promptly alerted the police.
Victor Smith, the Freetown City Council (FCC) representative assigned to the Wilberforce Cemetery, told Truth Media that the same group is believed to be behind the earlier dumping incident.
“When we asked them to produce a death permit from the FCC, they claimed they found the body at Old School, Hill Station, and were instructed by officers at the Akon Police Station to bring it here for burial,” Smith explained.
Police sources confirmed that they have taken custody of the body and are investigating both the source of the corpse and the suspects’ claims.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about unreported deaths and improper burial practices in Freetown, with local residents calling for tighter monitoring of cemeteries and mortuary procedures.
