The National Grand Coalition (NGC) has issued a stern statement condemning what it describes as a flagrant violation of democratic principles following the disruption of its Constitutional quarterly NEC meeting by the Sierra Leone Police.
In a press release, signed by Jesmed F. Suma, acting Chairman and Leader, NGC, the party expressed deep concern over the recent incident, asserting that the police intervention amounted to an assault on national democratic values and the party’s fundamental right to assembly.
According to the release, the NEC meeting, mandated by the Constitution to be held quarterly, was abruptly halted by police action, which obstructed the voting process and expelled delegates from the venue, purportedly under “orders from above.”
Leading up to the meeting, the NGC faced resistance from certain individuals allegedly affiliated with the ruling SLPP party, who sought to thwart the gathering in a bid to maintain the party’s alliance with the SLPP. Despite these efforts, the NEC assembly proceeded, with contentious issues such as the representation of absent district chairpersons being addressed.
However, tensions escalated when police intervention was required to remove a deputy chairman who initially resisted compliance with meeting procedures. Subsequently, a significant police presence, including three truckloads of armed officers, was deployed to evacuate all delegates from the premises, effectively ending the meeting.
The NGC emphasized that prior arrangements had been made with the police to ensure a secure environment for the meeting, requesting only minimal police presence. The sudden deployment of excessive force raised concerns about the motives behind such a show of power.
A key agenda item of the meeting was the consideration of a motion to reassess the party’s past election alliance with the ruling party, reflecting the majority’s desire to withdraw. However, a minority faction opposed this decision, leading to heightened tensions during the gathering.
Despite the disruption, the NGC reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and complying with police directives. However, it cautioned against excessive policing, warning of the potential for violence and calling for a respect for democratic principles and the right to assembly.
In closing, the NGC affirmed its unwavering dedication to democratic ideals and pledged to continue advocating for the rights of all Sierra Leoneans within the bounds of the law.
