In a solemn announcement on social media, Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Information and Civic Education has announced the funeral services for 18 security officials that were killed in last month’s attempted coup.
“18 patriots made the ultimate sacrifice for our democracy and peace on November 26, 2023. On Wednesday, December 6, 2023, we will lay them to rest. We must never forget them,” the Ministry revealed.
The nation was thrust into chaos when armed attackers brazenly stormed a military armoury, two barracks, two prisons, and two police stations during the early hours of November 26.
The violent confrontation with security forces resulted in 21 casualties, including 18 soldiers, a policeman, a prison guard, a security guard, a woman, and three assailants, according to Information Minister, Chernor Bah.
As the nation grapples with the aftermath, 13 soldiers and one civilian suspected of involvement in the coup are currently in detention.
The police have taken swift action, releasing photos and names of 32 men and two women deemed “fugitives.” This list includes serving and retired soldiers as well as police officers.
The authorities are offering a “handsome reward” to anyone providing information that leads to the capture of these individuals.
The manhunt intensifies as Sierra Leone mourns the loss of those who bravely stood in defense of democracy.
