APC Lawmakers and Local Councils Back Party’s Withdrawal from Government Engagements

Freetown, Sierra Leone – Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has announced that its Members of Parliament and elected local government officials have unanimously endorsed the party leadership’s decision to suspend participation in engagements with the government, citing concerns over delays in implementing electoral reforms.

The decision followed two consultative meetings held at the party’s headquarters on Old Railway Line in Freetown. On March 11, senior party officials met with both elected and nominated Members of Parliament whose appointments are currently under review by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL).

A second meeting on March 12 brought together mayors, district council chairpersons, councillors, and nominated councillors from various parts of the country.

According to the party secretariat, discussions during both meetings were described as open and constructive, reflecting what it called the APC’s long-standing culture of internal consultation and unity. Party representatives present at the meetings reportedly reaffirmed their support for the leadership and agreed to stand behind the decision to disengage from government-related processes.

The party leadership said the move was prompted by what it described as the government’s failure to demonstrate clear commitment to implementing the recommendations of the electoral reform process developed by the Tripartite Committee on Electoral Reforms.

The committee was established to address disputes and concerns arising from the country’s 2023 elections and to recommend reforms aimed at strengthening the credibility of future polls.

In a statement following the consultations, the APC said the unresolved issues surrounding the 2023 elections continue to raise questions about the integrity of the electoral system.

The party argued that full implementation of the reform recommendations is essential to restoring public trust in the country’s democratic institutions.

Party officials said the endorsement by APC lawmakers and local council representatives demonstrates what they described as a unified stance to safeguard the democratic mandate of citizens.

The leadership also commended its elected officials for maintaining discipline and solidarity, noting that their collective backing reflects the party’s commitment to accountability and democratic governance.

The APC further called on its members and supporters both in Sierra Leone and abroad to remain calm and united as the party continues to pursue what it described as lawful and democratic means to address its concerns.

The party said additional updates will be communicated through its official channels.
