Freetown, Sierra Leone** Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, has successfully earned her Master of Public Health Administration (MPH) from the world-renowned UCLA Fielding School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles.
The proud moment happened on Friday, June 12, 2026, as the First Lady walked the stage at Royce Hall alongside other graduates.
President Julius Maada Bio, together with their children, publicly celebrated the milestone.
In his heartfelt message, the President said:
“The children and I are incredibly proud of your outstanding achievement as you graduate today with a Master’s Degree in Public Health Administration at UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. Fatima, you’ve always been hardworking, diligent, and focused. Congratulations on this remarkable accomplishment!”
Born on November 27, 1980, in Koidu Town, Kono District, Fatima Maada Bio (née Jabbe) rose from the entertainment industry — where she shone as an actress, screenwriter, and producer — to become a powerful voice for Sierra Leonean women and girls. She previously earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of the Arts London.
Since becoming First Lady in 2018, she has been at the forefront of national development, especially through her “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign against child marriage, sexual violence, and harmful practices. As President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), she continues to push for women’s empowerment, better health outcomes, and stronger families across the continent.
Her new MPH degree will further strengthen her ability to tackle public health challenges in Sierra Leone, from improving maternal and child health to addressing issues affecting women and girls. Many see this as a timely boost to our country’s efforts in building a healthier and more prosperous nation.
