Makeni, 12 June 2026 – As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the cordial working relationship between the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, delivered a goodwill message during the opening session of SLAJ’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at the University of Makeni Auditorium.
The colourful ceremony was organised under the theme: “Strengthening the Economy Through Responsible Journalism.”
In his address, IGP Sellu expressed profound appreciation to the leadership and membership of SLAJ for the strong partnership that has existed between the media and the police over the years, despite occasional tensions and misunderstandings.
He emphasised the critical role journalists play in society, particularly in the dissemination of information and the promotion of democratic governance.
“You give a voice to the voiceless, speak for the disadvantaged, and advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. That is why your work is so important,” he stated.
The IGP reminded journalists of the fundamental principles that guide the profession, noting that adherence to these standards would help reduce tensions within communities and foster greater public trust.
He further highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between SLAJ and the Sierra Leone Police, which was developed in 2020 through the Office of National Security (ONS). He described the agreement as the foundation upon which the two institutions continue to build and sustain their relationship.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Sierra Leone Police to supporting SLAJ, Mr Sellu stressed the importance of continuous engagement on developmental issues in order to preserve and strengthen the spirit of cooperation established between the two institutions.
“We must continue to work together to bridge gaps and build trust. The relationship between the police and the media must be founded on trust, mutual respect, and constructive cooperation,” he noted.
As a demonstration of his commitment to strengthening relations between the two bodies, the IGP offered SLAJ President Alhaji Manika Kamara and his executive a two-hour engagement session with police recruits at the Police Training School. He explained that the initiative would provide recruits with a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of journalists, thereby minimising tensions that occasionally arise between members of the media and law enforcement personnel.
He also underscored the need for both institutions to collaborate in mediating and de-escalating issues of national concern, promising to work closely with SLAJ’s leadership to review and strengthen existing agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation.
Reflecting on his personal connection to journalism, Mr Sellu revealed that he had served as President of the Press Club during his university days and had a passion for writing.
“I am sentimentally attached to journalism. During my university years, I served as President of the Press Club and thoroughly enjoyed writing stories. I understand the value of what you do,” he remarked.
The IGP reassured journalists that the Sierra Leone Police is not opposed to investigative or critical reporting. However, he encouraged media practitioners to engage the police and seek balanced perspectives when reporting on issues relating to law enforcement.
He urged journalists to uphold the universal principles of journalism by ensuring fairness, accuracy, humanity, and accountability in their reporting.
Concluding his address, IGP Sellu called on journalists across the country to continue contributing to national development through responsible reporting.
“Let us strengthen the economy through responsible journalism and strengthen policing through responsible reporting. Together, we can build the trust that this nation needs,” he concluded.
