Lying on my bed as I struggle with slow recovery, I could feel the strength draining from my body. The Mpox virus had taken hold of me in ways I could never have imagined, even after taking the vaccine two weeks before I got sick from the virus; excruciatingly painful sores covered my skin, my body ached relentlessly, and fever burnt through me like fire. Each breath felt heavier than the last, and the cry for help in the ward at 34 hospitals only made the suffering worse. I have isolated myself from my lovely daughter for days, and each morning before she left for school, she came to my door with, “Good morning, Daddy, are you feeling better now?” I shed tears because I couldn’t see her nor touch her. Can you imagine how painful it is?
At the 34th hospital, whenever I go for cleaning and treatment, I see dozens of other patients groaning in agony, many far worse off than I was, their eyes pleading for help that never seemed to come. Young ladies growl on the ground, out and inside of the hospital, crying for help, but not much can be done by the doctors and nurses at the 34 hospitals.
Day after day, the supplies ran thinner. Nurses looked helpless, doctors exhausted, and the medicines—when available—were barely enough to ease our pain, let alone cure us. The fear of death was real, but more terrifying was the feeling of being forgotten.
This is not just my story; it’s the story of thousands who are suffering in silence. Mpox is not a distant crisis; it is here, it is now, and it is devastating lives every single day. We need more than sympathy. We need action.
I am calling on the government—those with the power and resources—to intervene. We need urgent funding for treatment, incentives for our noble doctors and nurses at the 34 hospitals and the other centres around the country, access to proper medication, and public health efforts to contain the spread. Every life matters. Let not our cries be ignored until it is too late.
We are not just statistics. We are human beings, fighting to survive. And we need your help now. Our families and your families are all at risk; our kids can’t bear this pain. Trust me, we should do better as a government. 😰 No child will bear the suffering we as adults are going through right now. Let us support our medical workers and motivate them to continue taking the risks and contain this dangerous virus before it spreads to our younger generation – our innocent children.
If urgent action is not taken, in the coming month we will be fighting a war we cannot easily stop; the hospitals will be full of smell and dead bodies. Act now, government!
Bravo to the doctors and nurses/workers at the 34 hospitals for your sacrifices!
Charles!
