Sierra Leonean Innovator Builds AI Robot That Challenges Stereotypes
FREETOWN, SIERRA LEONE – A wave of excitement is sweeping through Sierra Leone’s burgeoning tech and innovation scene as Abu Gibrilla Conteh, a multi-talented creative force, prepares to introduce his latest marvel: an AI-powered robot that is a double amputee and uses a wheelchair.
This pioneering creation, developed under the “Radical Inclusion AI Network of Robots (RAINBOTS)” initiative, is a powerful statement challenging stereotypes and championing the limitless potential within every individual.
Conteh, a gifted painter, sculptor, roboticist, and engineer, is a testament to resilience and the impact of opportunity. His journey caught the attention of current Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh during his tenure as Minister of Education.
Sengeh recounted meeting Conteh after he had dropped out of school, admiring his courage and subsequently supporting his enrolment at Milton Margai University of Science and Technology, where he has excelled.
The upcoming unveiling this week is not just a display of technical skill but a profound illustration of “Radical Inclusion” – a principle close to the heart of Chief Minister Sengeh. The robot, by its very design, redefines traditional perceptions of robotics and ability.
In a significant nod to Conteh’s burgeoning talent, his work was shared with Professor Hugh Herr, a world-renowned biomechatronics engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Professor Herr’s response was simple yet powerful: “super talented.” This accolade from such a distinguished figure hints at a bright international future for Conteh, potentially even at leading global institutions like MIT.
Chief Minister Sengeh highlighted Conteh’s achievement as a shining example of the transformative power of believing in and investing in human potential, regardless of background.
He emphasized that “Radical Inclusion” means providing everyone with the chance to reach their fullest capabilities.
This homegrown innovation story strongly resonates with President Julius Maada Bio’s flagship commitment to human capital development.
Conteh’s success underscores the profound impact of this national focus, illustrating how investing in the nation’s youth can unlock a future brimming with possibilities for generations to come.
